ABN AMRO, Govers and Link Magazine list best Dutch manufacturing companies:

With national pride ASML as its figurehead, the Makers Top 100 provides a nice cross-section of the Dutch manufacturing industry. From plastic bags to luxury yachts and from baby carriages to welding robots. Selected on turnover size as well as profitability, the 100 manufacturing companies on this list account for an annual turnover of 102 billion euros and provide direct employment for 300,000 people. They are the cornerstone of the Dutch knowledge economy and driver of many high-quality services.

The Makers Top 100, an annual ranking compiled by ABN AMRO, Govers Accountants/Adviseurs and Link Magazine, and supported by Gain.pro, Gwynt and Infor. It is a ranking with many big names, but also quite a few unexpected or players unknown to the general public.

The Makers Top 100 consists of the best Dutch manufacturing companies whose annual financial reports for 2023 are publicly available. They are Dutch companies active in the production of physical products and semi-finished goods. These include companies in mechanical engineering, and in the manufacture of metal and plastic products, electronics, furniture, ships and transport equipment. Companies active in trade and process industries such as chemicals, pharma, food and paper are not included.

The purpose of The Makers Top 100 is to put the Dutch manufacturing industry in the spotlight. 'Awareness of the manufacturing industry is fairly limited in the Netherlands,' says David Kemps, sector banker Industry at ABN AMRO. 'Of course there are a few public favorites like ASML and Philips, but for the most part it takes place on anonymous industrial sites in windowless block boxes. There, however, high-quality, innovative products are made that are sought after around the world. The industry provides high-quality employment and economic growth. This makes the manufacturing industry crucial to the Dutch knowledge economy.'

John van Ginkel, founder and publisher of Link Magazine, adds, "We have a heart for the manufacturing industry and think it's important that the sector is in the picture with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and all the clubs working on incentive schemes. We are happy with ASML as a figurehead but the industry is so much bigger and broader than people realize. Those companies deserve just as much attention. In our magazine, but also outside of it.'

Steef Verhoeven, partner and chartered accountant at 100-year-old Govers, on the financial choices in compiling The Makers Top 100: 'Net sales alone would make for a very static list, so we chose to also include, if positive, the EBITDA margin for the past three years. Not the net profit, because accounting-wise that can be influenced considerably. By averaging over three years, we somewhat filter out the very good and very bad years. To arrive at a dynamic
rankings, we took sales into account for 40 percent and the average EBITDA margin for 60 percent.'
